He was despised, and we held him as of no account. Worldliness has gone a long way to destroy the church of God. His bones are every one of them dislocated, and his body is thus torn with agonies which can not be described. But this explains it, when God accepts a sinner, he is, in fact, only accepting Christ. Many, many years ago, a number of persons were noticed to be going towards Smithfield, early one morning, and somebody said, "Whither are you going?" Isaiah 53:11. Our second head must explain the first, or otherwise it is an insolvable mystery how God should bruise his Son, who was perfect innocence, while poor fallible confessors and martyrs have had no such bruising from him in the time of their trial. Oh! Why, beloved, it was because the Father bruised him. Now, the Lord Jesus Christ looks at you in just the same way. A difference may be made in the penalty, when there is a difference in the person; but if the person be the same, the penalty must be precisely and exactly the same in degree and in quality. Well do I recollect, as a child, how man hours, how many days, I spent looking at the pictures in an old-fashioned "Book of Martyrs," and wondering how the men of God suffered, as they did, so bravely. His fellow citizens are just as heartless, and show no concern that he suffers death unjustly. It was my sin that brought Him that suffering and that beating and that shame and that reproach. This is what is called the governmental theory, that it is necessary for the maintenance of good order that an offender should be punished, but that there is nothing in sin itself which absolutely requires a penalty. Of Old Testament prophecies of the birth of the Messiah, among the most famous and well-known (in part because Handel included its words in his magnum opus, "The Messiah") is Isaiah 9:6, 7 (numbered 9:5, 6 in the Masoretic Hebrew text, the Septuagint Greek version and in German and some other translations). It was as a substitute for sin that he did actually and literally suffer punishment for the sin of all his elect. I say this was always the idea of a sin-offering, that of a perfect victim; without offense on its own account, taking the place of the offender; the transferrence of the offender's sin to that victim, and that expiation in the person of the victim for the sin done by another. As Christ himself stated it: "I am the first and the last and the Living one; and I was dead, and, behold, I am alive forever more, and I have the keys of death and of Hades" (Revelation 1:18). I think that I hear the reading of the register, the muster-roll. Isaiah 53:9. Is this the experience of our life in Christ? The KJV's translation of vv. The scripture nowhere says that Christ is his sufferings underwent the wrath of God; but it says here, (1.) (Exodus 29:15) And if a private individual offered a sacrifice, he also laid his hand upon it, as if he threw upon it his own sin. The structure of Isaiah also argues for its unity. The deuterocanonical books (from the Greek meaning "belonging to the second canon") are books and passages considered by the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Oriental Orthodox Churches, and the Assyrian Church of the East to be canonical books of the Old Testament, but which Protestant denominations regard as apocrypha. They date from 300 BC to 100 AD, mostly from 200 BC to 70 . Almighty love will have you. What is the gospel? Why, the parable does not tell us; for it did not run on with the subject to introduce the atonement. Piaculum committere means literally to commit a sacrifice, that is, to commit a crime for which a sacrifice is required. Ed. Something to ponder. [i] His thoughts on these difficulties can be summarized in the following three points: The servant is never specifically identified. Isaac, who might have struggled and escaped from his father, declares that he is willing to die, if God hath decreed it. Under this title he was brought into the world (Isaiah 9:6; Isaiah 9:6), and he shall not fail to answer the title when he goes out of the world. Isaiah 53:10. The ram caught in the thicket supplies the substitute, and faith's obedience need go no further. Ar. Now that scripture has been carelessly interpreted by many people as just lifting up Jesus. We would not touch them with a pair of tongs! My inmost soul glories in the Head of my clan in him of the pierced hands, and the nailed feet, who wears for his princely star the lance-mark in his side! That was the purpose of God when He created man-that God might be able to fellowship with man. If I am to be damned for the sake of other people, I demur to it. Isaiah /. JB ISAIAH Chapter 8 . Our text gives this a full solution, in that it says, "He shall make his soul an offering for sin." Christ having died for us, we came into another relation to justice, and it became possible for us to be regenerated, and brought into the household of God. "Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand." And part of the problem is that the Servant "songs" of Isaiah [42:1-4; 49:1-13; 50:4-11; 52:13-53:12] are an interplay of Israel, the remnant, and the Messiah. I may perhaps forget myself; I may run into sin and I may perish. (6.) He was pleased with the end in view, and with all that was necessary in order that the end might be secured. Furthermore, believers in our Lord are said to be his seed because they are like him. The Lord will yet fetch you up from the depths of the sea. We dare not impute to God the sin, but at the same time the fact, with all its marvelous effects in the world's redemption, we must ever trace to the Sacred Fountain of divine love. The spoil which God divided to Christ he divides (it is the same word), he distributes, among his followers; for, when he led captivity captive, he received gifts for men, that he might give gifts to men; for as he has told us (Acts 20:35) he did himself reckon it more blessed and honourable to give than to receive. He shall see a great increase of them; the word is plural, He shall see his seeds, multitudes of them, so many that they cannot be numbered. To this clause some supply the relative (asher,) which: A seed which shall be long lived. But I expound it in a more simple manner, Christ shall not be hindered by his death from prolonging his days, that is, from living eternally. Some persons, when departing from life, leave children, but children who shall survive them, and who shall live so as to obtain a name only when their fathers are dead. He is himself perfectly free, and therefore can he undertake for others. Jerome renders it, If he shall lay down his life for sin. The Septuagint renders it in the plural, If you shall give (an offering) for sin, your soul shall see a long-lived posterity. Lowth renders it, If his soul shall make a propitiatory sacrifice. Rosenmuller renders it, If his soul, that is, he himself, shall place his soul as an expiation for sin. Noyes renders it, But since he gave himself a sacrifice for sin. Now, if we wish to return to a state of favor with him, sin must be taken away. He sits at the right hand of God, even the Father, and he reigns there for ever. 3But his form was ignoble, and inferior to that of the children of men; he was a man in suffering, and acquainted with the bearing of sickness, for his face is turned from us: he was dishonoured, and not esteemed. I hear a great talk about the example of Christ having great effect upon ungodly men; but I do not believe it, and certainly have never seen it. That the Lord bruised him, not only permitted men to bruise him, but awakened his own sword against him, Zechariah 13:7. O thou who feelest in thine own body the effect of thy sin, till thou art loathing thyself, and wishing thou hadst never been born perhaps thou sayest, like John Bunyan, "Oh that I had been a frog, or a toad, or a snake, sooner than have been a man, to have fallen into such sin, and to have become so foul!" Man for his sin was condemned to eternal fire; when God took Christ to be the substitute, it is true, he did not send Christ into eternal fire, but he poured upon him grief so desperate, that it was a valid payment for even an eternity of fire. Instead of the fathers shall be the children, whom he will make princes in all the earth. Let it always be our meat and drink, as it was Christ's, to do God's will. Faith is the knowledge of Christ, and without knowledge there can be no true faith.
